“Because I felt that independent schools were out of my parent’s reach, I never considered applying to them. Instead, I opted to apply to a local catholic high school, like so many who graduated from my middle school. After getting exposed to the opportunities that independent schools offered, I was intrigued… but knew that my mom would never consider allowing me to board. Mr. Cedeño saw my interest and clearly understood what would be a good fit for me, and so encouraged me to visit a school. He also made sure that I focused on my grades and supported me in my discussions with my family which proved to be very helpful. He asked my mom to accompany us with no commitments. Before I realized it, I applied and was accepted into the school of my choice, the Berkshire School, an independent boarding school in Sheffield, Massachusetts. My mom, after many discussions with Mr. Cedeño, eventually supported my choice.”
